Douglas Avenue Cameras Solve Robbery

he Douglas Avenue BID Board has made it a priority to help ensure safety within the district. After exploring potential solutions, the BID commissioned a study to install a wireless security camera system in the south end of the corridor. Data from the Racine Police Department was used to determine the best locations for camera placement and ultimately cameras were installed at Hamilton Street, Superior Street, St. Patrick Street, High Street, and Charles Street.

On March 14th, 2019, the police responded to a report of a bank robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank, located at 1700 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The suspect, who was armed, fled prior to police arrival. After an arrest was made, the Racine Police Department notified the Douglas Avenue BID that the security camera system played a vital role in the identification of the suspect, capturing video both before and after the robbery.

The Police Department has requested that additional cameras be installed at Goold and South Streets. Planning is underway to install those two cameras in 2019.
