The Douglas Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) has created various grant programs to incentivize and lever-age investment within the district.

The Douglas Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) has created various grant programs to incentivize and lever-age investment within the district. These programs are primarily funded through special assessments paid by the property owners themselves. The Douglas BID Board of Directors has an obligation to the 210 property owners to in-vest in good, stable and financially feasible projects that will improve the appearance and curb appeal of commercial buildings along Douglas Avenue and stimulate economic performance, attract new investment, and inspire community pride. The City of Racine also funds Façade Improvement and White Box grants that commercial buildings within the Douglas Avenue BID may qualify for. Over $35,000 in grants are available.

Annually, the Douglas Avenue BID Advisory Board revisits those objectives and prepares a program of services to both support existing businesses and help to attract new development to the corridor.

Douglas Avenue Design Services Grant

This grant was created to help property owners within the Douglas Avenue corridor with design service needs in preparation of a façade improvement. A total of $3,000 per building is available through this grant.

City of Racine Commercial Building Façade Grant

With your design complete, and if your property meets certain requirements, you can apply for a City of Racine Facade Improvement Grant. Reimbursements are limited to 50% of the eligible costs, up to $10,000.

Douglas Avenue Adopt-A-Pot

This program was created to help the business owners beautify and green the Douglas Avenue corridor. Recipients will receive a giant 30” flower pot, valued at $250, that will receive new plantings each spring, fall, and winter. The adoptive business is required to provide the required maintenance to keep the flowers blooming throughout the spring and summer.

Douglas Avenue Landscaping Grant

This grant was created to help property owners within the Douglas Avenue corridor enhance the appearance of their property through improved or additional landscaping. The Douglas Avenue BID will provide a total of $250 per building towards the purchase of permanent flowers and plantings along the front or side facades.

Douglas Avenue Lighting Grant

This grant was estab-lished to help property owners within the Douglas Avenue corridor improve the safety and security of the area through the installation of additional exterior lighting. The Douglas Avenue BID will provide a total of $1,000 per building towards the purchase and installation of new ex-terior lighting.

Douglas Ave. Maintenance and Repairs Grant

The Douglas Ave-nue BID board established a 1:1 matching grant program as an incentive for critical exterior maintenance and re-pairs to commercial buildings within the district. The pro-gram will make available a new business development in-centive to commercial building owners, leaseholders and developers within the district. The maximum grant award is $1,000 and exterior restoration and painting, roof repair and replacement, window and door repair and replace-ment, and masonry work are all eligible grant expenses.

Commercial “White Box” Grant Program

The City of Ra-cine White Box Program is targeted to currently vacant
first-floor interiors of commercial buildings older than 50 years for the purpose of bringing these older commercial spaces into conformity with modern building code require-ments. The goal of the program is to incentivize older, first floor commercial spaces into active, code conforming “white boxes” for lease or use by retail and restaurant ten-ants.
This grant offers reimbursable funds up to $10 per square foot with a maximum grant amount of $20,000. The grant may not exceed 50% of the total white box project costs.

The Commercial “White Box” Grant Program is scheduled to sunset at the end of 2019.

FREE MARKETING & ADVERTISING

While construction may be behind us, we know that we have a lot of work to do to get our customers coming back. The Douglas Avenue Business Improvement District has authorized funds to purchase digital, print, and radio advertising again this year. This includes four Discover Douglas special inserts in the Journal Times. Over 30,000 copies will be printed and distributed.

If you would like to have your business included, At No Cost To You, please let us know as soon as possible. If your business is within the Douglas Avenue Business Improvement District, you are encouraged to participate. And, if you get us the basic information, we are always happy to write a story for you.

Businesses along the Douglas Avenue corridor are also encouraged to submit information about their business which will be placed on Facebook and included in Discover Douglas electronic newsletters. Our Facebook page has nearly 500 followers and our electronic newsletter reaches nearly 1,600 people. Let us know about your store hours, special sales, special events, etc. Send us photographs of your business. Let us help you!
